May 13th: Drive to Sligo

Today Abby and Jon talked to us about Cromwell and penal laws inflicted upon Catholics in Ireland. We left Galway and are on our way to Sligo where we will stay tonight. On the way there, we stopped for a "Kodak Moment" and enjoyed the picturesque landscape contrasting perfectly with the overcast day.
We quickly hopped back on the bus as the wind and rain were pretty severe and we're greeted with a sheep traffic jam! I wish I grabbed a picture but the sheep cleared the way pretty quickly!! Unfortunately it is a rainy day in Ireland but we've been gifted with such amazing weather this past week and a half and I think we are all just happy to be here, no matter the weather! Next we stopped at Kylemore Abbey and had lunch at the little cafe in the visitors center. The views were spectacular although a bit marred by scaffolding. Looking at pictures of the estate when not under construction I can assume it looks quite beautiful.

The ride to Sligo is the longest one yet, although scenic nonetheless. Many of the towns and streets we pass through seem very quaint and it's a shame we can't stop in every one. We were slowed down a bit by a bike race that Westsportif was putting on and there were a few close calls during the trip but nothing Gerry couldn't handle!
We end our day in Sligo at the Sligo City Hotel and I'm again impressed by the beauty and the quaintness of this place. We get to sleep in tomorrow and then we are off to Donegal!!
